Variable Stars Discovered by Amateurs

Dramatic evidence of the valuable scientific contribution made by amateur astronomers comes in the form of a tally of "Variable Stars Discovered Photoelectrically by Amateurs". The quotation marks indicate the title of an interesting article that appeared on pages 9 through 14 of I.A.P.P.P. Communication no. 40, dated June 1990.

The tally includes 72 variable stars, the variable designation in the G.C.V.S. if known at the time of publication, the V-band magnitude, the amplitude of the variability, the physical mechanism responsible for the variability, and a bibliographical reference to the paper containing the photometry that led to the discovery of the variability.

Also is a list of the 61 different amateur astronomers responsible for these discoveries.

A remarkable point worth noting is that, of these 71 variable stars, 30 of them (42 percent) are of naked eye brightness, i.e., they are included in the Yale Bright Star Catalogue. It might seem hard to believe that variability in these important, well-known, easy-to-observe stars went overlooked for so long by the (professional) astronomical community, but such is the valuable potential of the amateur photoelectric photometrist as a research scientist.

For a copy of that article in I.A.P.P.P. Communication no. 40, free of charge, e-mail douglas.s.hall@vanderbilt.edu.

Amateurs who have recently co-authored a paper announcing discovery of a new variable star (not included in the above-mentioned article) are invited to relay this information to Douglas S. Hall. These variable stars then will be forwarded to the Web Master for adding to this page of the Web Site.

Please include:
1. The name of the variable star as a G.C.V.S. designation as well as HR, HD, BD, and SAO aliases.
2. The title of the article.
3. The journal.
4. The publication date.
5. The page number or numbers.
6. The full list of co-authors, in order.
7. An indication which co-authors are amateurs Variable Stars Discovered Recently by Amateurs.
